Edgar has been working at Fixer almost since the beginning. In this spotlight, he tells us how his handyman experience began at the age of 10, what he’s learned from being at Fixer, and how being a dad has helped him understand what clients are going through.
How did you get into being a handy person?
My dad would fix things around the house and then have me do the same. I’ve been fixing things since I was about 10 years old – I started with toys.
What have you learned since starting at Fixer?
To be more understanding of people’s issues. For example, putting in a faucet. That’s something I’ve done a million times. But you don’t just want to put in a faucet and be done. Now I consider, “Are they okay with the position of the handle?” To me, it may not seem like a big deal but to them it’s everything. You consider what people’s standards are.
What does a great day at work look like for you?
It’s a great day when you can find parking around the city!
But when your schedule is full, and you get to meet new people. It’s also great to have repeat customers, and when you get to help them with their issue, that’s the best.
What’s your favorite kind of handyperson problem to solve?
When something has been an issue for the customer for a long time, and you go in and solve it in a few hours. People are knowledgeable about repair issues up to a certain point. I can only do so much for my car, for example, but at some point, I gotta take it to the mechanic, you know? That’s why people call us.
What do you think people should know about working at Fixer?
We’re a family work environment and we’re entertaining enough to be on a TV show. Everyone’s very friendly and respectful.
Tell us about a favorite memory working at Fixer so far.
I was installing a bunch of picture frames for a collage on a bedroom wall for a customer that had a newborn who was crying. Every time I would drill, the baby would stop crying and the customer was so apologetic, like, “Can we just be in here for a while you drill?” Being a dad, I know that sometimes you just need to do what works.
When you’re not busy Fixing things, what do you enjoy?
I love being with my family. I have 4 kids, aged 11, 6, 2, and 6 months. I have my hands full.
